Meigs County is located in the southeast portion of the state bordering on West Virginia. State Routes 325, 338 and 681 cross the county east and west, and U.S. Route 33 and State Routes 7, 124 and 143 run north and south. The Shade River flows into the Ohio River at the Meigs County eastern border.
Meigs County is part of Ohio's Appalachian Region. Its principal industries are coal, wood products and agriculture.
Major attractions in Meigs County include Forked Run State Park; Shade River State Forest; Meigs County Museum; Buffington Island State Park; McCook Monument; Old Courthouse at Chester; Pomeroy Historic District; Racine Locks and Dam; the Ohio River; and Meigs County Courthouse with every floor having a ground-level entry.

These returns must be filed with the County Auditor within 90 days after your first sale and thereafter on a yearly basis between February 15 and April 30.
Items such as inventory, machinery, etc., are taxed.

County Health Department
County Health Permit
Certain businesses may require approval and licensing by local health departments.
The County Health Department issues restaurant and food service licensing, as well as inspects and licenses public swimming pools, mobile home parks, and campgrounds. The department also provides school inspections; reviews nuisance and animal bite complaints, tracks county vital statistics and maintains a nursing division, which administers various inoculations and implements public health programming.
Food service businesses constructing a new building or changing the use of an existing building are required to seek review and approval from the Ohio Department of Health at 614-466-3543. If public sewage facilities are unavailable, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has jurisdiction. The Ohio EPA Southeast District Office in Logan, Ohio is available at 740-385-8501. All new food service businesses submitting plans to the Meigs County Health Department must have state building code and health department approval before receiving local review.
All existing food service licenses are reviewed and issued by March 1 each year. Persons purchasing an existing food service business are asked to notify the health department of any anticipated menu changes.
Fees for food service licenses vary from $75 to $425 for facilities less than 10,000 square feet. Facilities more than 10,000 square feet incur fees ranging from $200 to $500.
Licensing is also required for vending machines and mobile operations.
All health department licenses require an inspection, a waiting period, and a charge, so be sure to apply early.

Can provide general information on county business requirements including contact points for zoning regulation, soil test, control, hazardous waste, utilities, revolving loan funds and other economic development tools.

The Police Department is happy to provide referrals and information to interested small business owners and is staffed 24 hours a day.
Municipal Taxes
Municipal taxes are levied and collected by several different methods in Meigs County.
Municipal taxes are collected through each municipality’s court system.
Contact the Village or Township Hall of the legal municipality in which you intend to operate and identify what taxing agency with which you are to deal.
Contact the appropriate taxing agency and identify your tax responsibilities.
Employers are responsible for withholding tax payments from their employees and remitting this to the appropriate taxing authority when due.
In addition to the tax on individual wages, a municipal income tax also exists on net profits of corporations, partnerships, estates, and trusts.
Be sure to recognize this liability and take the required steps to obtain the necessary forms so that you may file within the prescribed time period.
In Pomeroy, the village levies a 1% income tax.
Business owners may contact the village tax office by phone, mail or in person. Businesses are asked to complete a questionnaire when opening their tax account.
Deadlines for withholding tax payments are dependent on the amount of tax due to the village. If more than $100/month, payments are due monthly; if less than $100/month, payments are due quarterly.
Businesses are required to file an annual tax return no later than April 30.
The Income Tax office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and is closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.
